Placenta preparation and encapsulation
Placenta preparation and encapsulation is a service that some of my pregnant patients have happily taken advantage of. The benefits of this miraculously restorative medicinal supplement can really make a difference in the postpartum experience.
The research on placentophagy (the scientific name) is still young, however many doctors, midwives, doulas, and other practitioners that work with women after delivery are well aware of the hormone fluctuations after giving birth.
For hundreds of years, many people all over the world (not to mention animals) have know the secret power of placenta as a medicine after delivery. The placenta, because it provides nourishment for the baby, is rich in nutrients and if consumed can help the mother heal and regain her energy after labor and delivery. In the Chinese Medicine pharmacopoeia, we call it Zi He Che.
Placenta encapsulation benefits include:
- Improves lactation and milk supply
- Helps balance hormones postpartum
- Replenishes iron, vitamins, and minerals
- Promotes faster recovery by decreasing postpartum bleeding and pain
- Wards off postpartum depression or the “baby blues”
I have heard nothing but positive comments from women who have chosen to do placenta encapsulation. My patients who have given birth multiple times even remark on the positive differences in healing, breast milk supply, and mood during the postpartum period when they have taken their placenta pills.
If you are still wary of this process, please know that the placenta is processed and is not consumed raw. It is cleaned, steamed, baked, and then ground into a fine powder that is put inside capsules (like the picture above). So all you get is a bottle full of pills with directions to take 2-3 pills twice a day. After 9 months of body changes, this is an easy way to start feeling like yourself again.
If you live in Chicago, please let me know if you’re interested in this service. I’m happy to help!
Preparation and encapsulation price (does not include pick up/drop off): $350
